Inspiration: Mondo Guerra Fall 2011 Collection

Do you watch Project Runway? I'm addicted to that show!
If you do watch it, then you'll probably already know Mondo Guerra. He was one of Season 8 finalists and he lost after a very controversial decision of the judges. I really like Gretchen Jones' creations as well, but I would have liked to see him win better.
He's incredibly talented and creative, I adore his style. His 2011 Fall Collection is quite similar to his final catwalk show on Project Runway, and I love them both. The way he mixes prints, the splashes of colour on a black and white foundation, the high waisted pants...
I really hope this is the start of a very successful career.

The unforgotten

Did it ever happen to you to make something and then (almost) completely forget about it?
That's what happened to me with this Rooibos dress that I finished shortly before Christmas and that has been hiding in my closet for almost three months!

Since I made it in wool, it won't get much wear anymore, since it seems like Spring is finally on its way. But of course, while taking photos, it started raining. I mean, WTF? Why do I seem to have problems every time I take my tripod outside my house?

Anyway, this is yet another love token to Colette Patterns. Another dress with many cute details: contrasting piping, the tiny collar, the shape of the pockets. I added two little buttons inspired by Gertie.
I just wish I had made it in a smaller size (why did the muslin seem to fit right?), but maybe I'll make a summery version of it and I'll be able to make up for this mistake. I'm also considering shortening it a few cm... Please let me know what you think!

The best of the week

Hi guys, how was your week? I caught a very annoying cold (I guess I'm getting too old to go to bed with wet hair) but I'm better and I'm hoping to get lots of sewing done this weekend.

1. Sherry says this dress is unnecessary, but it's so beautiful! Plus, she provided great explations on the construction.
2. Sarai's amazing skills never stop to amaze me... I mean, look at this dress!
3. Kasia explains how to achieve perfect buttonholes. I love her tutorials, they are so clear!
4. This dress by The Sew Convert has so much cute details. Run to her blog to see them all.

Finally, I really enjoyed this post at Sew Happy Clothes on when you know when you like to sew. That's so true!

Happy weekend, everyone!

Burda Easy Fashion SS2011

The photos appeared on the Russian Burda website and I had to give my opinion!
There are a few pieces that I like:

Two drapey tops. I especially like the second one, with the gathered shoulders and the crossed sections.

This blazer, although I guess there are better patterns in other regular Burda issues...

High waisted short. Very cute, but who am I kidding? I don't have the body to pull these off.

A romantic dress. Or maybe I only like the fabric they chose?

Here's my overall opinion: there are a few cute pieces, but there are too many variations of a very small number of patterns. Plus, they look like very basic designs (lots of elastic waistbands, for example).
It would probably be great for an absolute beginner (the instructions are also usually much better than the ones in regular Burda), but I don't know if I will spend 5 euros for it (why is it more pricey than Burda if it contains less patterns???).
Well, to be honest, I'm afraid I'll end up buying it anyway. When I skip an issue, I always feel like I might be missing on something, even if I have already seen the contents online. Does it happen to you too or am I the only Burda junkie?

Pay it Forward 2011

Source
I seem to talk about her blog a lot, but she keeps on surprising me with great ideas!
I just read on Nette's blog about Pay it Forward 2011.

How does it work?
The first five people who comment on this blog post will receive a handmade gift from me.
The only requirement in return, you must FIRST write a blog post explaining 'Pay It Forward 2011'.
Then, about the most exciting part, make and send a handmade gift to the first 5 visitors who comment and commit to do the same.
Don't worry about time. You don't need to send them all today or tomorrow.
Gifts from the heart take time and are worth waiting for them!

Isn't it brilliant? A little gift can go a long way and make someone's day!

The best of the week

First of all, a big thank you for all the lovely comments on my swing dress...
They really made my day!

  1. Stephanie drafted the pattern for this blouse herself and I think it couldn't look better!
  2. A beautiful shirtdress in a lovely colour by Janet.
  3. Freya shared a very interesting article on how to start your own business.
  4. Chie's Secret Garden lookbook is just to die for! Plus, I ADORE every single garment in it.
I also want to give you the links to the admirable bloggers who started raffles in order to gather donations for Japan. It's a good action and there are some great prizes, so check them out if you haven't already:
And that's it! Have a great weekend, everyone!
I have started a couple sewing projects and I hope to finish something...

Swing dress the REAL showing party

Yes, I kinda messed up last week: Casey had postponed the final party and I hadn't read about it. So, here are a couple more shots of my dress. I hope I'll be able to wear it without a cardigan and tights soon... After three days of non-stop rain, it's finally sunny today! :)
Even though I don't seem in a "party" mood, I really happy with my final dress and with the sew-along in general... I learned a lot! So thanks again, Casey!
Here is a list with all the other finished dress. Go check it out!

While I'm here writing, I want to wish a happy 150th birthday to Italy and all the best to my fellow Italians out there. Let's hope our country is going to be better soon!

Interview/ Intervista: Gervaise, creazioni di stoffa

A few days ago I got in touch with Sophie, whose creations for the brand Gervaise I've always loved. She was kind enough to answer a few questions about her and her creations.
(Il testo italiano è in fondo)

1 - Introduce yourself: tell us something about where you live, your origins, hobbies, etc.
My name is Sophie, I'm French and I've lived in Italy for 10 years. I like... to sew! I'd like to learn patchwork ma at the moment I don't have enough time.

2 - How did you start your business, Gervaise?
I started when I got to know eBay. I used to make fabric bags for me, as a hobby, and when I got acquainted with the Internet I thought that it could be an opportunity to sell my creations.

3 - How did you choose the name of your shop?
Gervaise is the main character of Zola's novel "L'Assomoir". I really like Zola, and I liked this name! I also chose it because Gervaise is a laundress and she represented for me all these jobs that no longer exist: laundresses, hatters... and who knows how many more that we are not aware of!

4 - Do you have formal training (sewing, design, etc.)?
I don't! I have a literature degree.

5 - Do your creations support you economically? If not, do you have another job?
They start to now. From a completely artisan production it's now becoming serial, though on a very small scale. Yet, it allows me to live off of it.

6 - What are your main sources of inspiration?
I have a book titled “La mode du XXeme siècle” by John Peacock, containing drawings of looks and accessories for every year of last century. Anyway, in general, I like vintage, retro looks and colorful fabrics.

7 - What are the main satisfactions you get from Gervaise?
Being able to manage my business freely, working when I want, even at night, if I want to! The other satisfaction is obviously to find my own audience, so to speak... Also meeting people who share and appreciate my taste and what I have to offer.

8 - How and where do you advertise your business?
Online, on Facebook, through my blog, on Flickr... I try to be on most social networks.

9 - Do you have any advice for who wants to sell or already sells handmade?
I have a lot to say in this regard! I don't think that "handmade" is an economically sustainable model. I started with handbags made by me because it was a possible solution and I had no choice. Considering the time I spent making each bag, the price I sold them for was ridiculous! Now I get partial help for the production, which gives me more time to search for new styles, advertise online and take care of my customers... I always have something to do!
Another thing I think is that, sewing a bag, it' not important if I sew it myself or if a professional does it. Actually, the professional gets a better result! It's different as far as embroidery and other crafts in which the machine cannot substitute hands are involved, the effect will never be the same.
Moreover, handmade is not always a warranty of "good-looking" and "well-made".

You can learn more about Sophie and her lovely creations at her Facebook page, where she's also just started a giveaway!

2

4
- Hai un'istruzione formale (cucito, design, ecc)?
No! Ho una laurea in letteratura.

5
- Le tue creazioni ti supportano economicamente? Se no, hai un altro lavoro?
Ora comincia.

8 - Come e dove ti fai pubblicità?

9

Burda 04/2011 : my eyes hurt

Oh my God! So much ugly stuff in this upcoming issue... I'm starting to wonder WHY I got a subscription.
This magazine is taking a turn I really really don't like. Give us Anne Burda back!

And what is THIS?
I admit there are also a couple patterns that picked my interest, but nothing too fancy. It's mainly because I really want a shirt dress for this spring and because I like the romantic feel of the shoot. But I'm still shocked by the other montruosities.

Also, the blouse at the bottom left reminds me of something Nette did a while ago. Nice!

Swing dress show time

Here it is, my swing dress! I took my time with this dress and it hasn't been the easiest process, but now it's done. I'm not 100% satisfied with it (expecially with the fit at the waist), but maybe I need some time to grow accustomed to it. That sometimes happens to me with the stuff I sew: it requires a lot of time and hard work, that when it's finished, I need a little while to fall in love with it again.

I'm really sorry for the crappy bedroom pictures, but spring is still very shy here: I took these photos on monday and it was snowing outside! My hair was also not collaborating, but enough with the excuses! I promise I'll put more effort in my pictures, but I hope you'll like these anyway.

The zipper is hand sewn using a prickstitch. I avoided an invisible zipper because I always manage to make a mess with them. This detail goes well with the vintage feel of the dress.

A detail of the inside: I underlined the dress in white lightweight cotton. I also used the fashion fabric to conceal the interfaced midsection, as suggested by Casey.

And then, the last touch: I sewed one of the labels I made for my shops.

Casey, thank you so much for hosting this sewalong, it was a beautiful experience! I hope it won't be the last on your blog!

Today in my mail:
Oggi nella posta:

The "Très charmante" necklace by la musette has arrived! I've been looking forever for a necklace with sewing related charms, and now it's mine! A huge thank you to the talented Virginia who also included a pair of stunning earrings as a gift. I truly adore them! (and they look super cute with my sew-along swing dress, whose photos will be up on thursday)

The best of the week

1. I think I'll copy this dress by Sarah sooner or later... Too cute!
2. Gertie never stops to inspire me (and I love her new hairdo).
3. Erica has started a new challenge, for which she'll wear more skirts and dresses. Nice!
4. Speaking of challenges, Zoe has started Me Made March. I don't feel ready to participate yet, but I think it's a great idea!

Plus, this guide from Grosgrain on sergers. If you're thinking about getting one, make sure to read it!

Lastly, even though it has nothing to do with sewing, Maru's last video, which had me rolling on the floor laughing. If you don't already know Maru the cat, this is the time.
