Burdastyle Magazine 09/2012

There is quite a lot I like in this issue, but it's basically four variations of the same pattern:

I know I wrote four and then included three pictures. That's because the fourth variation is a blouse with a very nice stand up pointy collar, but the fabric they used was hideous, so I decided to save some space.
But, am I right about this pattern? I love all the variations above! Of course, the dress with the peter pan collar is my favorite (again, horrible fabric choice IMHO). I really like the subtle gathered shoulders and the princess seams. The blouse is probably very flattering, since it has an additional dart (I'm hoping for back darts too).

How cute is this outfit? For once, I think they chose the perfect fabric for the pattern. I like the boxy shape of this jacket and I think I could look great both dressed up like in this photo (although, where the heck is she going with that cake stand?) and dressed down, with a pair of jeans or cropped pants.

Nothing earth-shattering, but you know I'm a sucker for unusual design details and I'm very curious about the shape of these darts.

And for those of you who sew with knits (I never seem to find decent ones), a nice t-shirt pattern.
I love the contrasting yoke and the ruching on the sides should be quite flattering.
Not that you can really tell from the photo, which is once again nice, but completely useless in order to figure out how the garment really looks.
Many photos in this issue are like that; when photographing the lace dress above, why did they drape a cardigan on the only visible sleeve? Also, I didn't include the photo of the model wearing the red blouse because she was sitting in front of a mirror, leaning against it. And can you really tell anything about the dress with the peter pan collar?
They have very good looking models, nice backdrops and props, the styling is not always my favorite but I've seen much worse... So why can't they showcase their product better? That's why I always wait for the technical drawings to be released before forming an opinion.

All in all, it seems like Burda is on a roll. Now, your turn to tell me what you think about this issue.

  1. I like the t-shirt pattern! And yes, they are so annoying with their fabric choices and hiding the clothes in the photos.

  2. I just bought this issue today and I really like it. There are lots of handy and simple t-shirt and dress patterns in it. I generally agree with you that burdastyle has become a lot more interesting. I have bought all the recent issues although I never bothered with the magazine before.

  3. My sentiments exactly!!!! I have been criticizing Burda's photography for ages now. But then it actually applies to La Mia Boutique and Patrones too. The impact of the photograph seem to be often more important than showcasing the garment style/details. I remember reading an article about now retired Anne Burda selecting the pictures for the new issue, and she would always go for the photo that shows off the actual garment, not the face of the model etc. Times changed….

  5. I tracked down this issue on Ebay since I don't have a subscription...because of your previous post about the Aug. edition. I'm completely in love! I thought the photographs were helpful, but I really preferred the dress design drawings better. I can't believe that I hadn't heard of Burda until your blog! Thank you for introducing me to them!!! :) So excited to delve into it more.

  10. Oooh, I LOVE that top dress. I agree on the fabric. While I like the print, it doesn't seem to suit the style of dress. I certainly wan tot make this one! :)

  11. Really nice dresses...although that beige is really hideous to me. From that issue I like
Princess Dress 152, Blouse 150 Smile please - Kids (they are girl's patterns actually), Sheath Dress 134 Designer - Matthew Williamson
I may have to get this one too!

  14. If you're referring to the beige lace, I hate it too. Looks like a dirty doily to me...

  15. I agree, I don't dislike the fabric, but it's such a busy print it would look better for a simpler design.

  16. That's so true, I have a few issued from the 60's and while some photos are very cheesy, you can always see the garment clearly. They should set their priorities straight...

  17. I like the blouse but I don't think I would wear it so I guess I don't have to make it. I'm excited for the t-shirt pattern, I'm starting to enjoy sewing knits and I want to make some basic tops for autumn! I also liked the turtleneck! I also wonder what burda stylists are thinking when they make the clothes in a very busy print or basically hide the model behind the props...

  18. I just finished cutting the pattern for the pointed collar variation. (seriously, that fabric/huge belt was a major wtf.) It was hard to tell if I liked the proportions of the collar because I couldn't even see it with that print! I'm skipping the cuffs they designed, basically because I've never done them before and the instructions weren't helpful enough to tackle.
I pretty much circled all you listed here with the additions of the wool trench coat (pg.17) and the plus size jacket on page 49.
