Peter Pan collar Datura blouse

As announced on Facebook, here's my first Datura blouse!
It was made during the testing phase of the pattern, because this time around, I was lucky enough to be a tester for Deer and Doe's new collection.

I also made a Datura with the cutout neckline, but I can't show it to you because my mother fell in love with it and stole it from me (!!!) and also because the pattern was changed after I sewed it.
After taking part in this process, I can only say my respect for Eléonore is even greater: she really puts A LOT of work in her designs and takes the notes of the testers very seriously.

But anyway, back to my Datura.
Do you recognize the fabric? It's the same as one of my Banksia dresses, a lovely cotton blend that I got from Megan Nielsen. I had barely enough of it left to make this blouse, I'm so glad I never throw anything away.

This fabric was perfect for this pattern, because it has just enough drape without being too light, although it was quite difficult to photograph and a lot of the details (like darts and yoke seams) get lost in the print. That's quite nice in real life, but it's not the best to show a garment in all its details to the blogosphere, so I apologize for that.
I do plan to sew the cutout neckline version soon, but I guess you'll start seeing a lot of Datura's popping up, if you're curious to see more of this pattern.

I promise I started working out again after seeing this last photo. I can't stand my chubby arms anymore... But hey, I wanted to show you the back of the blouse, although once again, the details are pretty much lost in the print. The buttoned lower bodice is a bit like the one of my refashioned Airelle blouse and it's such a sweet detail!

The thing I love the most about this pattern is that while it's loose-fitting, it's still flattering on a curvy gal. No one wants to look pregnant!
It's also extremely versatile, as the pattern comes with two variations (three, if you omit the collar), it can be very casual or more elegant depending on your fabric choice and it can be worn as I did here or tucked in a high-waisted skirt (or shorts, or trousers...).

What else can I say about it? I can't recommend it more, if it wasn't clear from the rest of the post.
Is Datura on your sewing radar?

  2. Yes ! Datura is definitely my favorite pattern from this new collection, so it's on my radar.
My question is : it's an advanced pattern, but is the version you show us (without triangles) more an intermediate level ? I definitely love the back of this blouse, if I'm not experienced enough to have it with the pretty triangles on the front, maybe I could try the peter pan collar version....

  4. I had never heard of Dee and Doe until about a fortnight ago, but I do love the look if this pattern, so it is definitely on my want list now! I love an interesting back!

Your version is lovely. I don't think it matters that you can't see the details. Can't wait to see your next version.

  14. I love this blouse- I couldn't even enter the giveaway since I had already bought it for myself! My only problem is how to do an sba on this pattern wih the single dart and yoke...any suggestions? I'll probably try it without, but since I'm an a cup and its drafted for a c, I expect to need the sba. Any tips would be appreciated!

  15. Love the buttons up the back. This actually the only one of the three I didn't order but mainly because I just don't like wearing anything sleeveless - I have major issues with my arms! It does look really beautiful though, so I may be converted yet!

  16. I had some doubts when I saw the Datura pattern at first, I thought it wouldn't be very flattering, but it looks great on you! I might reconsider not buying this pattern (and make my first top, I've only made skirts and dresses until now). :)

  17. This is gorgeous! I love the buttoned back. Can't wait to get my copy of the pattern.

Also, I am salivating over your cardigan! Where did you find that??

  18. Stunning! The back buttons are too adorable and I adore the fact that your mum stole your other version! That is a total win in my books! And could this D&D release be any lovelier? I can't wait until payday to snap them up!

  21. This is lovely! I love the buttons in the back. I agree, although it is loose-fitting, it is still flattering on someone with shape. It looks so good on you! Hmm, I may have to try this pattern for myself.

  22. Haha you are outrageous, your arms are perfect! This blouse is so beautiful and the datura is at the top of my 'to buy' sewing list as soon as I have the money!

  25. I'm sure it will, I can't wait to see your version of Datura!

  26. I would suggest making a muslin and see if you need the sba. Since the fit of the blouse is loose you might get away without one. If that doesn't work out, there's an excellent tutorial by Megan Nielsen (http://blog.megannielsen.com/2012/04/how-to-do-a-small-bust-adjustment-sba/)

  27. Datura is a great layering piece (although if you wear it under a cardigan or something you obviously loose the detail of the back). You can also try and draft sleeves (or use those of another pattern), I think I will for a future version, because I have the same issue as you!

  28. This would be a great first top! I also had the same doubt, but the pattern is really nicely drafted.

  29. It's from an Italian brand called Fiorucci, from last year I'm afraid. I love that chartreuse green and the material is super soft, I'm a cardigan junkie but this is probably my favorite :)

  30. I didn't think I would receive so many reassuring comments about my arms, but the sewing community has proven one again to be the best :) Thank you!

  31. Nice to see you've used this fabric again. This would be such a lovely top to wear on a hot and humid summers day - like what we're still experiencing here. When the weather gets that hot, fitted clothes come a close second to cool, light weight tops like this one.
