Do you remember I told you I liked a pattern from La Mia Boutique that was very unusual for my taste?
Well, I made a dress from it and it sucks.
TJ had warned me, but I went on anyway. Unfortunately, I also chose a TERRIBLE print for this dress (really, what was I thinking???) and the result is quite tragic.
I think I'll cut this dress shorter and then it'll go looking for a new home, because I can't stand to look at it.
But it's ok, mistakes are bound to happen once in a while, and as you can read in my post at the Sew Weekly, I'm still happy I went out of my comfort zone and tried something different. I also used shirring for the first time.
I'm working on something more promising for next week's challenge, so fingers crossed and happy weekend to you all!
Oh bless! It is a pretty wild print and I know it would be perfect for someone, but maybe not for you. I do like your 'head in hands' photo though :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I tried to have fun at least with the photos :)
DeleteHmm! Maybe a wider belt? Or maybe just accept that sometimes things don't turn out right
ReplyDeleteI definitely give up, this time.
DeleteYou could get rid of the mullet, add a wider belt and you have a funky dress.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am of the wider belt thinking too- but definitely de-mullet it. I like the fabric (she admitted shyly).....
ReplyDeleteWhy won't you keep the skirt and combine it with some calm colors tops? I think it would look different. Besides, asymmetric skirts are pretty much in style!

It's not that bad, use the skirt part or wear it under a solid/textured over blouse/short tunic for fall perhaps?
ReplyDeleteOh boy! I know that feeling! I made a top from a very pretty fabric that just looks Terrible on me and makes me feel dowdy - (grrr)
ReplyDeleteOh No! I'm so sorry! Thats so upsetting when you take the leap to step out of your comfort zone only to be disappointed. For the record - I don't think the dress is that bad!
ReplyDeleteYou can always chop it off to make a cute minidress tunic for summer ! Other than the high low trendy hem, which isn't an easy sell on me either, I love the dress.
ReplyDeletenot that bad. the fabric is so summery. or cut the tops and keep the skirt. you don't look bad on it... a little accessory will do as well.
ReplyDeleteOh I hate when that happens!!
ReplyDeleteHmmm what if you made it sleeveless and added a wide belt? I do think it's a cute print, it just needs some solid colored accessories added in!
I know that feeling! Stepping out of your comfort zone is great, but you can win some and lose some!
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts are turn it into a tunic to wear with narrow trousers, and you might even have enough skirt left to make another tiny top - but maybe you are over this fabric now!
I like how the print looks on you. But the top part seems a bit baggy. I made a similar dress from burda and I was also very disappointed. So I think that style is hard to wear. I would even out the hem and modify the top..
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I'm so sorry that it didn't turn out the way you hoped. It doesn't bad on, if that helps!
ReplyDeleteYou know, both me and my 14 year old daughter think this is cool. But you need to be happy in it...
ReplyDeletewell, it really all comes down to expectations and personal taste. I can clearly imagine you (or anyone else for that matter, purely hypothetically) in this dress, blogging about how great it feels, how amazing the pattern is and how happy it makes you feel. When you browse the blogs, isn't this the case, when you look at something and just don't see why the blogger thinks it is great. Or the other way round.
ReplyDeleteThe bottom line- you feel crap in it, and no alterations will ever change that. ( I am speaking from my own experience, all the comments are encouraging, not one even said - yes it is not for you, like some comments here). But it will not work. Why don't you give it away to a friend or to charity- it looks alright, there id nothing really wrong with it- and it might look stunning on another person. Or do a GIVEWAWAY! whatever you decide…..
just to finish though. You did a good job nonetheless
thanks for being real and being willing to share something that didn't turn out the way you wanted. :) I really like your blog!
ReplyDeleteGosh, I'm sorry! I don't think it looks bad either, but if you don't like it, I know that someone else will love it!
ReplyDeleteActually, I do not think it is bad at all! Maybe you shorten it a little bit and use it as a tunic at the beach. I can well imagine that looks great!
ReplyDeleteI saw this on Sew Weekly and didn't think it looked AS bad as you thought... but I kinda liked the mullet hem trend (I even made my version with leopard print to really honour the mullet's power). I agree with Nette's comment. Beach coverup. Salvage the beast.
ReplyDeleteI think it would look super cute with a wide belt and make it knee length or turn it into a tunic.
