I thought it was nice to take a break from the sew-along and see what's going on with the latest issue of Burda.
After my last post, I made the resolution to be less negative and try to see the positive aspects of this magazine.
So, let's start with what I liked:
I love everything about this dress: the contrast detailing, the silhouette, the little pleats... quite a unique pattern, I don't think you can find something too similar in past issues.
VERY WELL DONE, Burda guys!
These coat and jacket are awesome. Again, very unique designs, very detailed, modern looking and flattering. I'd gladly steal the first one off the model and wear it all winter (although I'm not too sure how practical the hook closures can be).
I also appreciate the styling of this shoot, modern but not "staged-fashion-victim", as they did a few times in the past.
This is a very simple skirt, but I very much like the idea behind it. It's the perfect project for a beginner who wants to create something with a little more "umph" without using a complicated pattern (and on trend, with the color blocking).
The fabric choices in this issue, for once, are adorable.
Then,there are some so-so patterns...
I really, really want to like this dress, but the more I look how it fits the model, the dowdier it looks to me. I don't know, maybe as a blouse, with narrow sleeves?
Again, I want to like this dress (it's the vintage pattern of the month), but all that added volume on the belly could be a problem for many people. I'd definitely make in a lighter fabric, if I were to attempt it.
And finally, two WTF moments, because these reviews are not complete without at least a couple of them.
The vest pattern is available on its own and it's quite flattering (if vests are your cup of tea), but these ginormous sleeves are just ridiculous. They're not even costum-y, they're just plain weird.
Again, ridiculous sleeves. You might like this jacket and it's fine, but I just find it horrendous, very 90's and not in a good sense. The shiny baby blue satin doesn't help at all...
In every December burda they have at least one dress in a weird shiny fabric that looks like it's just cheap lining. I really hope I never get invited to an event that requires that kind of dress.
ReplyDeleteBut I loooove the hooded jacket and the vintage dress and I think I'm going to buy this issue and see if I can make a wearable blouse from the lace dress. With the princess seams it should be easy to make it fit
I actually snorted with laughter at the WTF patterns. I mindful of a quote from Project Runway...what sort of fashion crack were they smoking when they came up with those designs?
ReplyDeleteThe jackets are gems!
ReplyDeleteWow, I actually shuddered when I saw the last dress! Gross! I really like the dress with the button tabs at the midriff, but you're right-- it might not look that great in real life.
ReplyDeleteI kind of agree with your more positive attitude to this issue, I love their color blocking and the colors seem fresh and appealing to me! but, I still don't understand why their styling gets in the way of showing off the garment. I mean this is a sewing magazine, not fashion magazine, eve though I appereciate to see how a garment is styled (it might give me idea how to style it if I make it) but why style it in a way that takes away from the garment? I mean, that cute simple skirt, why layer a long t shirt over it so that you can see the top strip of fabric? and with the coat that you liked, why layer that huge scarf on in? I just don't understand why the insist on styling garments in a "fashionable" way, I want to see what the garment looks like for god sake!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of a pattern I saw on burdastyle today where they were showcasing a pair of vintage trousers. THE MODEL WAS SITTING/LAYING ON A CHAIR, you can only see the pants from the thigh down and they look like plain trousers to me. what the point of a picture like that??
HA sorry I always write the longest comments on your burda posts, I'm just so frustrated with them!
You have some great picks from this issue.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the coat and jacket, even though we are about to go into summer here in Aus. Might have to try them for winter - plenty of time to find great fabric!
ReplyDeleteMay be the last sleeves are very royal pattern?%) See http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/6419/5199956.91/0_81abd_5f4d3df1_orig - this is wedding in Luxembourg, this is princess of the Netherlands%)))
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWho in their right mind would make a jacket out of baby blue satin? I don't understand. And I appreciate your Burda Magazine reviews; they very entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI think for this one, we need to be a little negative. The dress with the peter pan collar is very dowdy! I want to like it (I LOVE PETER PAN COLLARS) but I just can't!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I love writing these reviews, I feel like Micheal Kors judging in Project Runway XD I still have to use a "disco ball" analogy, though.
ReplyDeleteNo offense, but I don't like them any more on a princess.
ReplyDeleteOn the contrary, with all the money she probably has, she should hire a better stylist...
Don't be sorry, I enjoy your comments :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I share your frustration on the styling, it's random I didn't write it in this post because I always complain about that!
LOL
ReplyDelete%)) Of course, you don't need to like them even if this would be queen%) I just tried to joke%)
ReplyDeleteahah, ok! The resemblance is there, though, great eye :)
ReplyDeleteOh and I bought it today and I was shocked to find out, that for being not as bad as the last issues, it cost 5,50€ instead of the usual 4,90€?????!?!?! But I had to have it because I have high hopes for the peter pan collar dress as a blouse..
ReplyDeleteWTF??? I was gifted the subscription so I don't know if the price is also higher here, but that's insane... Decreasing quality, increasing price? No way.
