Datura blouse with cutout neckline

When I posted about my Peter Pan collar Datura, many of you expressed curiosity towards the the cutout version. So it's not exactly by popular demand that I made this second version, but your comments definitely pushed me.
And when I found this lovely light blue cotton that looks a lot like my new love, chambray, I decided it was a good marriage.

I swear my hair is not neon orange in real life... EEK!
I often have the tendency to overcomplicate things, but this time I kept it as simple as I could and used the same fabric for the whole blouse, bias binding included. I really like how this creates a good balance with the many, lovely design details of the Datura.

And just for fun, I styled it in two different ways. I don't think it looks at its best with the skirt, but it's just because this fabric is not as soft as I'd like it to be, so it gets a little messy when you tuck it in a waistband. Other than that, I think it's a very versatile blouse that can be worn in many ways.

The cutout neckline is much simpler to construct than one might think. You just need some patience attaching the bias binding.
The yoke is lined and I also used French seams for the side seams, so the inside looks immaculate, which is always a plus in my book.

And to wrap up this short post, a little announcement:

"I, Anna of paunnet, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '13. I endeavour to wear a self-made accessory or item of clothing for at least four days a week for the duration of May 2013."

Last year, my pledge was three days a week, so in the spirit of challenging yourself, I added one more. I think four days a week is a good compromise. I do wear a lot of handmade garments, but I don't want to take a picture of myself every day. For me, it would be more stressful than fun, which is what this challenge is supposed to be. Four will be a challenge for me, but one I can handle.

Are you taking part?

  2. Je suis entièrement d'accord avec toi : cette version à triangles équilibre l'ourlet arrondi de la blouse ; et le tout reste très féminin !
Datura en chambray est si simple, mais tellement belle !

  20. The biggest size is 46, measurements are 104 - 84 - 110 cm (41 - 33 - 43 inches). I hope it helps, I'd love to see what you make with it!

  21. It's marked advanced because the instructions take for granted that you can take care of the basis without too much explanation and because the cutout neckline requires patience and precision.
It could be a little scary for a beginner, but if you're more around the intermediate level, you can definitely tackle it! :)

  22. Yes I will, I love that pattern! I've already cut a Reglisse dress but I saw that Eléonore is going to cover some very interesting variations, so she'll surely inspire me to make another one.

This is lovely, might have to check out this pattern in more detail. One question though: where is your lovely skirt from?

  24. Thank you!
The skirt is vintage, directly from my mum's wardrobe. I guess my love for polka dots is hereditary :D

  29. Love all your Datura projects! Beautiful! Am only a beginner but didn't notice the "Advanced" label so blithely forged ahead. Never did figure out the step telling you to pull the front strap a few cm as shown in illustration because no matter what I tugged I couldn't make it look like that. My 71 year-old brain gave up and I hand stitched the shoulders. Would love some advice!

Here are some pictures of my finished Datura.https://picasaweb.google.com/113317090261 I'm so pleased that I am already cutting out the second.

  30. How cute, your Datura looks really great!

If you're having trouble with that technique, you can try and use the one explained in this tutorial (http://www.coletterie.com/sewalongs/rooibos-sewalong-all-in-one-facing-and-piping), I find it a little bit easier!

  31. So, I bought this pattern recently and I keep looking on google images and flickr for inspiration and I keep seeing this one all over the place. Might have to steal your idea of doing one in chambray! Quick question: did you use bias tape for the bottom hem or is that folded over? I've made two and the fabric I've been using has been thin enough that I can just fold over twice but I'm afraid the chambray might be too thick for that. Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I used bias tape (made with the same chambray) because I wanted to keep as much length as possible, and it worked very very well. If you do a folded over hem, it might get messy in the curved portions, the bias tape helps preventing that! :)

  33. Ooh ok! I thought so but you did such a great job I couldn't even tell! :) Just bought some chambray yesterday, so excited to start!
