Burdastyle Magazine 04/2014

Guys. Guys. GUYS!!!
This issue of Burda is SO good, I'm (almost) speechless. I mean, while I went through the preview photos my jaw literally dropped and I asked myself "is this the same magazine from the last months years?".

I don't know if something changed in the artistic direction or what, but this really looks like a whole new magazine, and I couldn't be happier about it.
I got in touch with Mokosha and it turns out we were in the same state of shock. Some of these patterns are exactly in her style, so I can't wait to see them popping up on her blog.

Now, less blabbering and more commenting. Although my comments on these patterns are pretty much all something like "beautiful", so I'll be concise and leave space to the images.

The first set of patterns all have a modern feel to it, but they're so much cooler than the usual Burda standards!!
Take these two dresses: clean, simple, modern lines with interesting design features (look at the back darts of that second dress, for example). Just great.

This is something I wouldn't wear myself, but would see on a whole lot of people...

... although I immediately like it so much more when it's shortened into a top. Also, the skirt is simply gorgeous.

I'm really uncertain about this dress... The design is interesting, but those front panels look a bit too far from the center front to be balanced... What do you guys think?

Again, this is something I wouldn't wear myself, but I can still appreciate the design. On a tall woman, this would be pretty spectacular.

The next set of patterns are presented in a folksy/beachy themed photoshoot, and while most of them are not that memorable to me, these two are real stand-outs.
The pants remind me a lot of the Chataigne shorts by Deer and Doe, and this is actually a variation I wanted to try out.

I'm repeating myself here, but... gorgeous! That bib/yoke thingy in the front might be a little overcomplicated, but it does look great.

And last but not least, my favorite set of patterns, with a vintage feel to them.
The pants were too cute not to include them again; the blouse looks cuter on the model than on the technical drawing. I like the collar, but I would probably eliminate the faux wrap effect.

A shorter version of the maxi dress from before, with a few different details. I LOVE how this looks on the model, fabric choice included (and shoes, too).

This is a little overcomplicated, but all these details are so adorable that they really work together. WANT!

The elasticated waist is a huge let down for me (it feels too dressed down compared to the rest of the dress, imho), but the rest is simply stunning. Those sleeves, oh, those sleeves!

I didn't include any of the plus size patterns because there was a lot to show already and I found them a little boring anyway, sorry! There are also a couple men's patterns and some extremely cute kids patterns.

So, what's the verdict?
I guess it's more than clear how happy I am about this issue and the direction the magazine seems to have taken. No huge wtf-eries, no rectangles (well, just one top, which I didn't include), classy styling... I hope it's not just random, and it will be consistent in the future issues.
I'm so proud of you, Burda, welcome back! But please, keep it up!

Now I'm curious... What do you guys think?

  1. I was looking forward to your review, and am happy to see so many lovely patterns. I am def buying this issue! Hallelujah!

  2. I, too, was VERY pleasantly surprised with this issue! I want to sew up those front pleated pants. And that first dress you list, the criss crossed front and drapey-er skirt... at first glace I loved it.. then at closer look I see how that skirt under the front drape is a bit sloppy/frumpy looking and might flow in an awkward way. I REALLY want to see someone make this up and prove me wrong, it really was taken by it initially. I'd more likely go for the top version they have of this. There are so many things I'd sew up in this issue, it's shocking. Good job this month Burda!

  3. I agree - Burda really outdid themselves with this issue. The patterns and styling are much improved. Even though I'm not sure how many of the patterns are 'me', I can totally appreciate them for the interesting design!

  4. Totally agree with you about the criss-cross dress and the awkwardness of how the skirt falls in the front. I'm also waiting to see someone else make it up and entice me to take a closer look :)

  5. The check blouse and trousers combo is adorable. My other faves are the short maxi dress and the spotty tea dress. They've really excelled themselves on these styles. I might have to go out and buy this.

  6. i can not wait to get my own copy of this issue (10 more days, grrrr.. it takes a bit time for burda to hit the stores here).. and then i plan to sew pretty much everything from it, starting from that first dress you listed, or jumpsuit, or that dress with front panels.. may even try out that blazer pattern for men, it was about a time they release something like that

  7. that bib dress, both maxi and shorter, is perfection for an easy summer dress! I recently subscribed to the new US edition and *fingers crossed* I hope my subscription starts with this issue because it is great! though, I'm a bit creeped out by the second photo's "sex in the kitchen" pose!

  8. Ooh, this looks really pretty and fun! I buy European Burda from an international bookstore when it's a nice issue, so I'm excited to stalk the store until this arrives!

  9. LOL The photos with the male model are all pretty creepy XD

  10. I wonder if it's just a problem of the photo/pose of the model... The blouse version looks good too, not that you can really tell from the photo...

  11. Wow, I would seriously consider buying this issue, although I tend to have some issues with the fit and sizing of Burda patterns. I really love those pants, though, and the two dresses!

  12. Funny enough I was checking this out earlier on. Loved it I will definitely be buying next week.

  13. Hi Anna, why don´t you sew nice models from Burda style and you do just that boring Deer and Doe?

  14. This is a great issue. The gingham blouse and grey pants were my favorites from this issue as well! I actually really love the complicated little details like the top stitching. After collecting Burda for so many years, their last couple of years of ultra simple patterns have left a little to be desired (for me). I bet that white dress with the side petal pieces would look great if they were partially topstitched down.

  15. I'm sorry that you find Deer and Doe boring, but I found my holy grail with their patterns: they fit me with no alterations, the designs are perfectly my style, they come in sturdy, durable paper and have included seam allowance.
I do want to occasionally sew something from Burda, since I buy the magazine almost every month and I haven't made anything with their patterns for years, so I'll try extra hard in the next few months!
Let me know if there's a pattern you'd like me to sew in particular :)

  16. These look fantastic, a much better offering than usual. Can't wait for mine now...

  17. I flipped through it a few days ago and I fell in love! But like with every magazine I force myself to leave it in the store and when I still want it a week later I can go and buy it :)

  18. I'm with you on this one. Best burdastyle for a good while. The first two patterns you posted are my faves. I got my copy today. Will have to make these designs up.

  19. Yeah, I really love the blouse version! I wish I had enough time to just make every last thing I want in patterns I see :) I'm really working hard on only using fabric in my stash so we will see what I am able to create from this issue!

  20. Oh you are not wrong. I love that high waist skirt and the pleated pants muchly. Also, all the plain fabrics in the first few are something I'm definitely wanting to introduce more of into my hand-made wardrobe. Thanks for sharing!

  21. Come al solito i tuoi commenti sono " spot on" ! Condivido pienamente. E l'ultimo vestito con le maniche sarebbe veramente molto bello se non fosse per l'elastico :( ... suppongo lo si potrebbe rimpiazzare un drawstring doppio chiuso con un bel fiocco...

  22. Heh, I'm afraid this issue didn't do a lot for me. I liked the jumpsuit but nothing out of the rest leapt out at me. I'll admit there are some patterns with interesting details though. And is it just me or were there a lot fewer patterns overall this month? There was a whole story dedicated to styling the same two blazers over and over again where there would normally be a regular pattern story. Really hope that doesn't continue, but the preview for next month seems a little thin too so I'm not confident.

  23. I worry the dress with the flaps at the side could leave you looking a little, I don't know, insect-like?

  24. I'm going out for my issue today along with two rolls of grease proof paper for tracing. Thanks for the preview my Weekend is now planned.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That happens! De gustibus non disputandum est :) But I think whatever their taste is, they should at least recognize the shift in coolness and richness of details of this issue!

    ReplyDelete
  26. è quello che pensavo anche io! Oppure bisognerebbe prendersi il tempo di rimodellare il corpino con delle pince. L'elastico rovina veramente l'eleganza di questo modello.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh no, I thought you were going to like this issue!
I don't know about the number of patterns, because I don't have the physical magazine yet, but I personally wouldn't mind trading some patterns in exchange for more details.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Haha, I guess someone might actually like that :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love these reviews you do - great when the clothes are worth looking at and hilarious when they are awful! I can tell though that you did not live through 80s clothes at the time... pleated pants and pouffy sleeves, urgh, I could never go there again :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think that they read your blog! Or they should read it if the want a clever feedback! I don't buy Burdas anymore, I just go to the library to see if it's worth to buy or not!

    ReplyDelete
  31. i agree, lots of good patterns here! i may try to get my hands on this issue, i could see myself making several!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love your article, and I so agree with you : this is a new great magazine, hope that they keep the move!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I bought my issue a week ago already, and I love it just as much as you do! My list of things I want to sew just became a lot longer...

    ReplyDelete
  34. That's a good point; I'd prefer quality over quantity! I'm probably just being grouchy because I never like the spring and summer pattern releases.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I saw some of these come up on the Burdastyle blog during the week & was equally impressed. From what I've seen of the issue the shorter bib dress and the pleated pants are my favourites. Both really pretty & super wearable

    ReplyDelete
  36. Agreed., amazing issue. I was as go smacked as you. I need to make the jumpsuit immediately (even though I'm unsure of whether it will do anything for my figure) xxx

    ReplyDelete
  37. ooooh it's definitely more interesting than previous issues!! I'm still not sure any of these patterns are me. But definitely patterns I appreciated. I WISH I could wear a jumpsuit like that beautiful white number.

  38. Love that bib dress! So wearable and pretty!
