A Stitch in Time vol.2

One of my goals for 2012 is to knit a garment. I learnt to knit a long time ago, but just the basics. I think I made a couple scarves (just knit, purl, repeat) a few years ago and that's it. But now I really want to learn more.
Back in December, I saw this post on zilredoh and I fell in love with the book "A Stitch in Time". Those gorgeous vintage knitted garments were exactly the motivation I needed to better my skills, so I got the book as a birthday present for myself and now I just need to decide where to start (but after completing a circle scarf I started waiting for the book, in order to spruce up my knitting).

I really hope I'm not being too ambitious, but trying won't kill me, right? I also have a very old book of knitting techniques and the internet is full of resources for beginners, so I know where to look for support. Hopefully, you'll see at least one of the beauties below on this blog during the course of the year. Wish me luck!
Now, enjoy some photos from the book and try to resist the urge to go buy it for yourself! :)

  1. I totally understand why these images have inspired you to knit and you should go for it! there's nothing wrong with being ambitious ;o) I only started knitting in October last year and the online help available is really brilliant, as a beginner I found www.knittinghelp.com super useful! Good luck!

  2. I love those vintage knits. I can't knit and I'm sure I never will, but my mum can.....! The sweaters are so beautiful, I may have to put in a request for a hand knitted birthday present! x

  3. OMG! At a glance, I thought the first few photos were your own photo shoot! I was amazed at how true to the vintage style the photos were.... then i read the post. LOL Sorry if resemblance to that lady may in anyway offend you, but I thought the photos are fab! I just found a stack of yarn my mom had here, while she was living with me, so knitting is on the cards too.

  5. Really lovely! Do it! It's a good idea to complete your circle scarf first so your tension will be more even if you're just jumping back into knitting after a long absence, but like Marie says, there's so much help available to you online! I do a lot of garment knitting-- feel free to email me with any questions and I can try to help! I love this book... I'm going to try not to buy it now. :)

  6. I have so much in my knitting queue I'm going to be knitting for the next 150 years, but might have to sneak a look at this book - I love the first two!
    Have you checked out ravelry.com?

  7. I've had my eye on the Stitch in Time series for a while now - they really are lovely! There's nothing wrong with being ambitious especially in knitting where you can easily rip out any mistakes. Besides, knitting is really just variations on the basic knit and purl stitches.
I agree with Sherry - if you haven't already, check out Ravelry and look at the notes that others have left regarding these sweaters. It's such a great resource and may help you decide which sweater to tackle first!

  8. I agree that there's nothing wrong with being ambitious! I'm doing a knit along with lladybird.wordpress.com right now, and did a guest post on her blog last week about making your first sweater. I'm also going to be posting on my own blog today or tomorrow with my favorite sweaters for beginners. And you should absolutely check out Ravelry!

  9. I have also bought this book. It;s gorgeous!! I am a novice knitter but it was the designs in A Stitch in Time Vol. 1 that made me want to learn. I have just finished a cardigan out of vol 1 and proud to have managed a finished knitted item (other than a scarf).
