Burdastyle magazine 05/2012

Oops! I completely forgot about Burda and the issue is in the newsstands already! I still can't pass the chance to give my un solicited opinion, so here's what I like:

It's no surprise I like skirts and dresses, but these two seem to be very interesting patterns. The first one has a almost corseted waist and deep front pockets, while the second one has a front fly, front pleats, front pockets and welt back pockets. The only thing I don't get is the horizontal seam of the second skirt... What's the point?

This buttoned blouse is also pretty cute. These darts must be pretty flattering (I hope there are darts in the back as well) and the collar has a nice shape. Although it must be noted that the Burda team tried to make it as awful as possible by using one of the ugliest fabric ever. Thank God for technical drawings.

Sadly for me, the patterns I like the most this month are for plus sizes. This dress with a detachable peplum is an example, but the whole black & white plus size section is really beautiful.

And since I haven't complained yet, I'm going to end the post with something that kinda pissed me off. There is a vintage inspired pattern and I thought YAY! when I read it. Than I saw the photos and realised that Burda decided to take a super cute vintage '60s pattern and turn it into this draped, velvet, unwearable mess. Couldn't they just reprint the vintage pattern as it was?

  1. i actually like that low back dress.. i think it's going to look lovely in some different fabric (i almost never like the fabrics that burda uses, but hey, as long as patterns are ok, they can use shower curtain fabrics for all, i don't mind it).. and that skirt with pockets is lovely too.. too bad i wont have time to make any of these garments :(

    1. I think I'm biased because a) it looks nothing like a vintage pattern, b) it's not bra-friendly, and I can't afford to go bra-less. I'm sure you could make it work, though! Maybe when you come back from escavation?

  3. I like both of the skirts a lot in this upcoming issue, as well. Maybe that is just a deep hem on the second skirt? If its a seam it is kind of weird.

    1. It's probably a hem, but then again, why making such a deep hem? Isn't that just a waste of fabric?

  4. a me piace solo il vestito per taglie più, la camicia si sarebbe normale ma che cavolo di stoffa hanno usato? è veramente inguardabile !

  5. The second skirt - I think it's a hem, not a seam. Just look at the technical drawing - the line is dashed. And I'd totally make it if I had the magazine. I might try to make my own pattern someday ...

    1. I think you're right, I was a bit confused because in that case it's a super high hem!
It's very likely going to be available on Burdastyle if you don't feel like drafting your own!

  6. I almost always find I like the plus sizes most. Or the tall ones. But I'm a size 34, and short! Also, a lot of the items I like start at a 36. I know one can grade the patterns up or down but I can't be bothered.

    I like your choices.

  7. I love the yellow skirt, I think the style is very nice with a retro feeling. Are you going to make some of these patterns?

  8. ooooh i love the orange skirt (2nd) and i think the low draped back velvet thing would be smashing in a drapey silk fabric! i'm not a braless gal either, but you could either decrease the depth of the back or maybe increase it slightly and add a back strap to cover your bra strap?

  9. I thought deep hems add weight if the fabric is heavy so it hangs better. Read that somewhere. If it is a seam perhaps it is so you can do a colour block. Just guessing here as am only a beginner.
