Sureau dress Sew-along

It's finally here!
I'm so very excited to officially announce my first sew-along in collaboration with Eléonore of Deer and Doe. She will take care of the French readership on her blog, I will write in English.
As I had hinted previously, we are going to work on the most popular pattern of her collection, the Sureau dress.

The sew-along will start on November 5th, so that those of you who still haven't got the pattern will have all the time to receive it. The pattern has just gotten back in stock, and you can grab one for yourself here.

This is the schedule:

1st week (05/11):  Starting out
      - Monday : How sizes work and a little French glossary
      - Tuesday : Choosing the fabric and buying the supplies for the dress and the muslin
      - Wednesday : Tracing the pattern + using more than one size, or in-between size
      - Friday : Sewing the muslin

2nd week (12/11): Adjusting the pattern
      - Monday : SBA and gaping back
      - Tuesday : FBA
      - Wednesday : Adjusting the shoulder line
      - Friday : Lenghtening or shortening the bodice and the skirt

3rd week (19/11): Construction
      - Monday : How to make perfect gathers for the bust and the skirt
      - Wednesday : How to set sleeves
      - Friday : How to sew the zipper

4th week (26/11): Variations
      - Monday : Adding a collar
      - Wednesday : Omitting the sleeves
      - Friday : How to add a lining on the skirt / on the entire dress
      - BONUS: How to add horizontal pleats

Both Eléonore and I are quite the perfectionist types, so we are hoping to cover everything that you need! We will give further support on the Flickr group of the sew-along, where you can show your fabric choices, muslins and, of course, final dresses. The group is bilingual, so don't be scared if you see some French here and there (on the contrary, enjoy how international we're being :D ).

I am so excited, I can't wait to start! Admittedly, I'm a bit scared because this is my first sew-along, but collaborating with Eléonore has been a dream until now, so I'm very very positive! :)

So, who's in?
Please leave a comment below to further boost my excitement, and if you want to spread the love, here's a button for you to grab:

  2. Consider me in (ish)! I want to do it but I don't have a lot of time to sew lately so, I'll probably not be able to keep up... I am going to the launch party on Saturday though!

  4. Don't worry, the Flickr group will be left open after the sew-along. Although it's a very quick dress to sew, so I hope you'll be able to party with us at the end! (And I'm very jealous of you for being able to go on Saturday!)

  6. how exciting! I'm in, but I might be a little late to the party, as I can't buy any more sewing patterns or fabric this month! I love this dress, so I'm looking forward to the sew-along!

  9. Why why why? Eleanor informed about the sew along, when i send her a mail asking if she ships patterns in Greece, and i was so excited, when i learned it! But, i have my master's thesis delivery in 16/11...Damn! I want to participate, but maybe i won't be able to follow every step. We'll you accept my participation, after what i just said? I won't be that bad at all....at least i'll try not to! Please please please...,;)

  11. Hey, don't worry! Everyone has their priorities! If you can't finish the dress with us, the Flickr group will still be open, and the most important thing is that you enjoy the process and your finished dress, no matter how long you need to sew it! Of course you're counted in :D

  25. Just ordered my pattern. I really want to make all the Deer & Doe patterns but I am afraid of the french. My 13 year old is fully bilingual (a schooling option here in Canada) but she is a typical 13 year old and not so willing to help mom. I cant wait for this sew-along. I will definitely buy more patterns, especially if they get printed in English :)

  27. Yay! I'd love to see a version made by you!

  28. Welcome! I'm so happy that you're starting a blog for this :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Basically yes, I'll do a series of posts in English covering the construction, so you should be able to sew the dress even if you don't speak French.
    Thank you and welcome! ^^

  30. Wow, that's so exciting! I hope we can help to make your first project a successful one!

  31. Yay, Ai, I'm glad you're joining us! There's no rush, but I'm sure you'll find this dress very easy to sew.

  34. I've ordered the pattern and am waiting anxiously for it to arrive. In the meantime, I'm going to buy my fabric :)

  35. ahh I was resisting buying this before the english translation was released fully but you've won me over with the idea of support through all the stages. Order placed now. I'm very much a beginner but the design is too lovely to pass up. Hope I can do it justice. And maybe I'll be brave enough to document my progress on my yet to begin blog!

  36. Great idea! Did you see the fabric requirements and recommendations on the site?

  37. I just ordered the pattern! So excited to do a sew-along -- I need help understanding how to adjust a muslin and how to transfer the adjustments to the pattern.

  38. I am so happy to be joining this sew-a-long. I have never done one before, but the topics you will be covering sound like just what I need. I have ordered the pattern and am looking over my fabric stash for just the right fabric. I'm excited!!

  39. oh i'm in love with your version of this dress but i'm really scared of ordering a pattern in french! i'm learning to dressmake at the mo and i've only made one dress so far...my language skills are pretty good but i'm worried that i'll get lost in all the details, despite the sew-along tips. think i might be brave and do it anyway!!

  41. I ordered my pattern yesterday! I live in the US and am spreading the word in our sewing blog land over there about this pattern. I speak NO french, only Spanish, so I'm hoping that this isn't completely full of sewing recklessness! I'm actually completely excited! Here's my promotional post! So excited! http://www.designsbysessa.com/2012/10/je-suis-fou.html

  42. Hello everyone!!! :-) I am new to this website having only just found it this week. I am on a mad buzz of dressmaking at the moment having only ever made pyjama bottoms before. (!!!) I tonight tried a basic dress form and it turned out ok considering I am quite new to it. I do however have experience with sewing and alot of experience with cutting and measuring so I am very curious to know what one could achieve with an actual paper pattern, your guidance and all of the excitement of the other people making this too!I have just ordered the pattern, and I am super looking forward to giving this a go. A great idea - a beautiful pattern. I love the site too. Delighted to have found you!
