Burdastyle Magazine 01/2013

I'm incredibly late with my Burda review, but I promise you haven't missed much.

Speaking of being late, for all of those who are wondering why there was no review of La Mia Boutique in December, that's because no issue came out. They wrote on their Facebook page in early December that they were experiencing some technical issues; a week later they wrote that their magazine wasn't going to close down (WTF?), then two days ago they thanked their fans for their support and they are hoping to give us good news soon. They didn't say anything at all about the next issue, which I found a little disrespectful for their subscribers... A little more transparency might have been appreciated.

Anyway, back to Burda. Let's start with some gorgeousness:
As I said, gorgeous! This neckline is to die for.
I'm not going to write that this photo sucks in terms of showing the garment in a clear way, but you know I'm thinking it.

Very simple, but very flattering and chic.
I don't really understand the necessity for three horizontal seams if you're going to use the same solid fabric for the whole dress... Suggestions?

I think this dress has huge potential but it looks a bit dowdy in the photo, definitely because of the color... and maybe because of the sleeve length? Is the dropped waist a bit awkward?
It looks like it has a low neckline in the back, which might be very interesting.
I'm curious to know what that dashed line at the waist means.

I'm usually not too into the loungewear patterns, but there are some very cute ones in this issue, like this long-sleeved t-shirt here. There are also some cute pants and cardigans in this issue.

I could stop this post here, because I wasn't hugely impressed by anything else.
BUT.
Burda included some Fasching (i.e. Carnival) costume patterns in this issue, and they are creepy as shit, so I had to include them.

WHAT?

RIDICULOUS rendition of a Darth Vader costume and the photo is extremely creepy.

The costume idea is cute, but this photo gives me the chills for some reason.

And this is awesome.
I need to be careful not to show this to my boyfriend, or I'll have to make him an adult version of this Yoda costume asap.

  1. I bought this issue recently and it looked promising. Maybe the 3 seams on the dress eliminates the need for darts? Not sure though. I liked the Peter Pan one until I notice that it was only in a petite size in the magazine. I would have to grade it up if I wanted to make it which is a bit annoying.

  2. Those costumes really are poor - they're a sort of cross between old and just plain crap. And the front of the caterpillar looks pregnant!
The first dress is cute but I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy the magazine ;)

  3. I am dying - these are hilarious. But I do love the 3-seam dress - I may have to get on that.

  6. Did you renew your subscription? If yes, was it more expensive? Because this issue is 5,50€ again, seems like they really raised the price. That's the reason I'm not going to buy this issue, even though I think there are nice patterns in it, i like the loungewear and the aenne burda collection is pretty as well. The costume for "kleine Raupe Nimmersatt" looks a bit like this human centipede thing :/

  7. I think the caterpillar costume is very funny for a group of friends. You need to drink a little bit of beer and have fun%))))

  8. As a new sewist I'm all for more knits and loungewear. Fitting is difficult for me without a sewing buddy so I like the knit fabrics and the more relaxed styles which give me an easier time. Plus, isn't it all what we wear most often anyway. I've got a whole bunch of knit fabrics just waiting for the right patterns. Finger crossed for this issue.....

  11. Three horizontal seams = elimination of bust, waist and hip darts + better shaping along the side seams. Also allows for colour blocking if that's something the maker is into.

  14. I think the three horizontal seams give it some interest. Also I'll go a long way to avoid sewing darts! That one's my fave from this issue. Overall it was a bit disappointing but I do hope they keep the vintage stuff going.

  15. Me too! The vintage patterns are what keeps me hoping...

  17. Thanks, TJ! I don't know how I didn't figure it out by myself (Sunday morning brain fart?)

  18. I think it's very personal... I do wear some knits, but I don't like to sew basic knit stuff and loungewear, I prefer to buy it. I also have a hard time finding cute knits.
That being said, I like that Burda includes a few of these patterns from time to time, it's nice to have some variation.

  19. I have a couple more month in my subscription and I don't think I'm going to renew it. I was hoping I'd get it again for Christmas but Santa is feeling the recession.
5,50euros is a lot in my opinion... I think I'll start skipping issues also, although the magazine addict in me will suffer.

  20. I'm thinking about subscribing to "meine nähmode", a magazine with simplicity patterns in it so you get 10 different patterns (didn't count) for 5€ and it comes out 4x a year. or one of the dutch magazines, knipmode also sounds inteesting to me

  21. That yoda costumer is pretty darn awesome :) But I'm loving that first dress the most - such gorgeous lines!

  22. I have been eyeballing that first frock too- it is so lovely!

  23. I just have to write this - I really hope that Burda's "Human Centipede" costume wasn't inspired with the namesake movie. It makes me sick to imagine the analogy
