Burda Easy Fashion SS2013

For those who are not familiar with this publication, Burda Easy (or Easy Fashion) is a biannual sewing magazine aimed at beginners and young seamstresses.

I swear I was so excited about this magazine when I first started sewing. It was awesome! I'll leave you a link to one of the first issues my mum got for me when I was learning to sew (here), it's in Italian, but just look at the pictures.
There wasn't a ton of patterns, but there were always many cute, interesting ones (this was also the "era" when indie patterns were almost non-existent).

Now, you'll understand what I mean when I say that this magazine changed a lot and dulled down immensely when you see this:

Fabric rectangles with elastic or a drawstring.
The last "skirt" doesn't even involve sewing.
COME. ON.

Followed by this. Disgusting.
And the styling is beyond ridiculous.

To be fair, there are a few nice patterns, although they don't justify buying this magazine at all, at least for me.
This pants can be a nice project for a beginner, although I wouldn't recommend that sash that ties right at the crotch to anyone.

I don't like this type of hem very much, but at least this is on trend.

I was so excited about this pattern when I saw the photo because I thought it had ruched sleeves, or something like that. Turns out it's a regular blazer styled with bunched up sleeves. Sigh.

This is kinda cute, although a shirt dress is probably the last thing I'd recommend to a beginner. Unless you have a very good machine, sewing so many buttonholes can be a pain.

This is a cute dress that was made in a terribly heavy fabric, styled poorly and photographed even worse. It has a lot of potential, though. There's also a blouse version of this pattern (you can see it above, paired up with the pants) and I like it a lot.

This issue is definitely a NO for me. Burda has increased their pricing, so one more reason not to purchase this.
What about you?

  1. If I had to teach someone to sew, I agree these would be great styles to start on.

  2. I was looking at the preview images last week laughing about your eventual explosion on the very same. Managed to win a stack of some of the older ones on ebay-loving it. XD Too bad they're all summery ones though and it's very nearly winter here..

  3. I won't lie, i am super into that blazer, if only because it is really similar to the Morris Blazer from Hound ( http://cache1.bigcartel.com/product_images/60707327/HOUND-SS12_1352.jpg ) WHICH IS CONSTANTLY SOLD OUT, and I therefore have been trying to make my own.

  4. Man, I love your pattern reviews so much. You're always on point with your critiques and I'm often chuckling to myself as I read them. What is UP with Burda anyway? As an amateur sewist, I'm grateful for their vast, ever-evolving pattern collection but so much of it is hideous and outdated.

  5. I completely agree with you ... I bought this magazine because of the blazer... I hoped there would be more patterns... but, well you said everything about this issue! :)

  6. Wait, you don't want a super tight knit skirt/wrapped bandeau combo? OH wait. Never mind. Yuck! What terrible patterns! I do like that blazer, though...

  7. We never see this one round here but I can't say I'm terribly disappointed based on those styles. The strange asymmetrical top on the ballet dancer has possibilities but the rest don't appeal much. I might have wanted something like this when I first started sewing and most of the regular Burda was too difficult though.

  8. Love your review. I do think the shirt dress has non-functional buttons as I see a little side zip tab in the pic. For beginning sewers, you want it to be easy but also something they'd love to wear! I remember the first few projects I made - the skill was not there but the enthusiasm was and I wore my poorly made garments proudly, lol.

  9. I am still a beginner, however I hate most of these patterns. I hardly ever buy Burda Easy because I don't find anything I like. Why go through the effort of learning how to sew and end up with something like that first top ? Even a beginner can have some taste. Which makes me wonder exactly who is the target for this magazine since both beginners and experts seem to think it's not so good, and the regular Burda style is gradually getting beginner-friendly.

  10. I like the blazer and I don't plan on joining ballet anytime soon so the others would be useless.

  11. Wow, we are meant to inspire new seamstresses, not bore them to sleep! Yawn! So uninspiring and that twisty wrap no-sew skirt? seen that in Pinterest like 1 million times, hardly worth paying for in a magazine! The last 5 are good, I think a blazer and shirt dress are encouraging, with someone along side a beginner could achieve those and feel really proud, unfortunately they have picked up a different magazine by now ;)

  15. I also have a little time to think about it, and why is that girl carrying a skateboard? Is that really an outfit made for skateboarding?Does a bandeau and a pencil skirt scream agile, and able to do kick flips? Because all I would think is, wow I hope my boob doesn't fall out of this bandeau , or, wow it really hard to spread my legs enough to stand on a skateboard properly in a pencil skirt.

  18. I can't believe that some people actually got paid for their work on this issue. Especially designers and stylists. This issue is a HUGE disappointment for me. The price is also rude-8.56 euros in my country.
Burda Easy s/s 2009 was a very good and I guess they reached their highlights back then.
