Burdastyle Magazine 12/2013

Burda decided to end 2013 with a bang, releasing one of the best issues of the year. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but for once, I'm overall happy with everything in this issue: the designs, the fabric choices, the styling... Well, not so much with the photography, but that day is still far away, I'm afraid.

Coup de coeur of the month! A simple sheath dress with some lovely details. Easy to make, easy to fit, beginner-proof... I love it!

Aand... second crush of the month! I LOVE the 40s vibe of this dress, so feminine and elegant! You need to be careful about the point on your crotch, but the rest is absolutely stunning.

More gorgeousness! I like this dress better with long sleeves (shown in the photo above with the pink dress) and the chiffon here looks pretty cheap, but it's beautiful. I love the contrast of the narrow skirt of the slip with a fuller skirt on top.

This is not exactly a dress I'd associate with December, but it's really beautiful nonetheless. I love the gathering at the center front and the huge sleeves, although I would skip the sleeve ties. There's also a shorter variation of this pattern, but I think the longer one is much more striking.

You know I have a soft spot for Burda's outerwear, and this trench coat is no exception. I'm not a huge fan of the paper bag sleeves and I would probably make the pockets smaller, but the collar and the little cape-like detail beautiful.

And of course I also love this menswear inspired tuxedo jacket. It reminds me a lot of this jacket from 2 years ago, but that's ok.

Next, two relatively simple patterns that I like quite a bit, especially paired together. Love the asymmetry and the zipper of the skirt.

Another couple of pieces that are not earth-shattering, but very wearable, especially the top. That draped neck is quite beautiful.

Next, the designer pattern of the month. The length of the skirt looks a bit ridiculous to me, but shortened, this would make a really cute little dress. I especially like that the design makes it look like separates.

And finally, a cute plus-size pattern. Do you remember what I said about the photography at the beginning of the post? This is a perfect example...
Anyway, this top is similar to the one in last month's issue: it looks like a blouse with a draped piece at the neckline, but it's really a rectangle of the fabric that it's not part of the blouse itself. What I don't understand is, if the fabric they used here is a woven, how is this thing supposed to sit on your shoulders? Wouldn't it be crazy uncomfortable to wear?

So, was I right or was I right? Are you going to get this one?

  1. I love the dress in the second photo and I'm quite sure I'll buy this issue, but I have to admit I can't remember the last time I actually sewed something from Burda. I buy it once in a while, but even if I go through the hassle of tracing the patterns, I, for some odd reason, don't get to the actual sewing part.

I like the green top...and had seen a mustard dress I like...can't tell if it's the same as the pink pleated one above. Will need to check out this issue...I love some of their fabrics!

  3. I like the zippy skirt and the dress with the huge sleeves would make a great Christmas day dress. Careful when lighting the pud though! I'll be buying - thank you for the review.

  4. I'm definitely getting this issue! I like all the dresses you showed, although with the first one - I'd make it more fitted with a longer zipper at the back. The dress with wide gathered sleeves is a bit odd in a December issue... And I agree that the designer's dress is ridiculous, even as an evening dress. In this fabric and length I'd have to stand still like a pillar all the time, imagine a trip to the theatre in it!... *^w^* But shortened might be quite cute, especially with this separation effect. Overall, a very good issue.

  5. Ooh, I'd shorten the designer pattern and wear it in a heartbeat as a little cocktail number! Really cute!

  7. Oh my god, I'm typing this comment and heading directly to the newspaper stand! I love everything that's inside, especially the patterned trench coat and the designer's model (only it would have to be knee length for me).
Thanks so much for the review Anna!

  9. My everyday life doesn't allow for dresses so it's tough for me to get too excited bout them but I really like the ones you highlighted. And yes, that one with the crazy long skirt is beautiful. The bodice is just beautiful.

I must have that asymmetrical skirt (and no, my life doesn't allow for skirts either but...!) and that draped top is gorgeous. I love the tuxedo jacket too.

  11. I'm sure this has been answered before... but where would I find this issue in the US (presumably online)? Any major bookstores? Unfortunately we don't have of any of those worldwide newsstands around here like they have in NY. Thanks! I love this issue!!

  13. Is this the same magazine? After reading countless reviews of seriously naff styles with over fussy details I can't believe they've finally come up with some decent designs. I think I'm going to buy this. Love the shift dress and the maxi. I'm with you on their outerwear. I recently made one of their jackets and the pattern was really well cut.

  16. Firstly I'd like to say how sorry I am to hear about your dog. Very sad! I dread the day our dog goes, she's my third child! Is fostering a dog a viable compromise for your family? I hope you can work something out.
Re: Burdastyle - I also loved this issue. Not many things that I don't want to make! I could happily spend the whole of 2014 making up all of the things in this issue!

  20. I love reading your burda style reviews. This does look to be a promising issue. I really like the 40s inspired dress and the designer dress. There is something so divine about those kind of pleats/tucks when done in a heavy fabric!

  21. I love that black two-piece look-a-like dress. Do these patterns eventually appear on Burdastyle, is that how it works? Or do I have to buy the mag to get that one...

  22. I love your review of patterns! Your comments crack me up..and your honesty is very helpful. I was wondering if you bought the BurdaStyle Digital Magazine, the first U.S. issue? I am curious what kind of patterns it come with it, but the BurdaStyle purchase page does not show the details..
