Burdastyle Magazine 11/2013

Let's do this!

I'm putting this pattern first because it was probably the one that caught my interest the most.
The point is, I absolutely hate these pants and you would need to pay me in order to make me wear them. Much like harem pants, I find them ridiculous and incredibly unflattering on any body type. But the truth is, a lot of girls are going to like them. In fact, I showed them to two friends who have completely different taste in fashion than me (think edgy and modern) and they asked me to make them for them (not gonna happen).
They're trendy, they're (ugh) cool, so they'll probably have a lot of success. I'm VERY curious to read what you guys think of these.
Now, the rest of the magazine didn't really wow me nor disgust me. I'm kind of in the same "meh" zone I've been for the last few issues.
This jacket, for example, is very, very cute, but am I amazed? No. Maybe I will be when I look back at the issue in a few months, which seems to be happening quite a bit to me.

Again in the outerwear department, a really stunning jacket that fails to impress me only because I feel I've already seen it from Burda. Still gorgeous, though.

Super basic cowl neck tank with a shrug. Nothing special, but you can never have too many basic patterns, right?

Much like for the jacket in the last issue of Burda Young, I was so disappointed when I saw the technical drawing of this top. I thought it was a knit top with some awesome draping at the shoulders, but it's a woven top with a shrug (filling the "rectangle magazine" quota of the month). Wah wah waaah.

This looks cute: a pencil skirt with some design elements to add interest. Although maybe those pleats are not best friends of a pear-shaped girl like me...

Designer patterns of the month, by Alessia Giacobino... I personally don't like the skirt, but the blouse is interesting. Those sleeves look very chic.

And now, an array of dresses!
I like both of these quite a bit but all those panels leave me scratching my head.
Did you notice that Burda is doing a lot of this multi-paneled dresses lately? To me they look like a lot more work than regular darted pieces and I find them a bit intimidating for alteration (meaning: how do you make an FBA on this kind of bodice???).

I like the sheer yoke and sleeves, the keyhole in the back with the little bows and the French darts, but I don't like the fullness at the back and the length.

I want to like this dress but it just screams bad '80s to me... The photo does not help AT ALL. Maybe without the puffy sleeves?

The plus-size patterns of this month are particularly beautiful, especially these two dresses above. Plus-size girls, you might want to take a look at this one!
I'm extremely curious to know your take on this issue... Keep it or leave it?

  1. I look forward to your reviews of Burda magazine. I've been wondering for a long time if I should subscribe. After seeing your reviews, some patterns are okay at best, but a lot are misses. Those pants! They are super trendy and I don't know why anyone would spend money and time making those. I don't think it's flattering on folks with hips. I think it's perfect for RTW stores, and that's probably where it should be.

I do love the plus sized patterns though. They're gorgeous!

  2. i'm actually obsessed with those crazy pants! not gonna make them just yet, as they won't look good on present day me, but future me is looking forward to them (present me is in the third month of workout, and i guess i need three more months to get my ass into right shape for those type of pants).. present day me is going to make this leather sleeve jacket (sans leather sleeves).. and that designer patterns probably.. in conclusion: i really like this issue :)

  3. I actually think the pants look interesting, but would I wear them? No! I don't like it when pants are that loose in the crotch area, pyjamas are the exception though.
I do like the yellow skirt but it could indeed be a bit unflattering or create weird wrinkles with those pleats.

  4. I'm feeling meh for everything in this issue except the plus-size patterns. I would leave it.

  5. I don't have my issue yet ( I'm a subscriber but it does have to come all the way to Australia..) but I like several of the styles you've highlighted. I know they repeat patterns, or just modify older styles a little bit, but I like to see the new styling and use of different patterns.
I love the yellow skirt, and my rectangular shape might work for the style. The leather sleeved jacket is totally cool. I have a few more months to think about the patterns, we are in spring here... Perhaps that helps too, I get to see others make the styles up?

  6. This looks like one of the better issues in a while. That blouse with the drapey sleeves.... breathtaking. And I love those pants. But hard to pull off, fo sho.

  7. This issue looks boring (as most of the design we've already seen before) except for the trousers you don't like :) I had a similar looking pair before and I would make them again. They are a great wardrobe builder for tall girls.

  8. I've already left a comment on Burda's page- I, too think these trousers do not flatter very many women. If u r lucky enough to be very tall and very skinny - go to it but I'm not sure that they really suit anyone. I don't buy the magazine anymore- except if I come across an issue( which is highly unlikely here in UK these days) and see something I really like. I have to say that one thing about Burda- the designs don't appear to date. I can still find items in old issues that can be updated very easily- sometimes just by choosing an up to date fabric and adapting length of skirt etc

I absolutely agree with you about those pants - they are not for me!

  10. I so look forward to your Burda posts!
I find the crazy pants funny, but I am old enough to really enjoy not understanding "what the young people are wearing nowadays". Although that blue top and shrug is a disappointing rectangle, rather than awesome draping, I rather like the effect and think it would work well in a knit (and it would take, like, 10 minutes and LOOK as if you had awesome draping skills, which is a win in my book!)

  11. I actually like the jacket with the zip and asymmetrical collar. That collar is huge tho. I would maybe cut it down a bit.

  12. I hate those pants, they're incredibly unflattering, I think!
The rest of the patterns are kind of okay for me. The yellow pencil skirt is nice but I'd move the pleats a bit towards the middle of the front.
I like some dresses - the v-neck ones but I'm not sure about the amount of elements on the fitted one version, maybe if you colour block them they'd look more interesting. As for the sheer top dress - I'd make it much shorter and made the back fitted. I also like the plaid sleeves dress.
Generally, not the best issue but also not as bad as two previous ones.

  13. love you're comments on burda as usual :)... not sure yet about the issue...i also got the feeling during the last issues that they tend to repeat a lot their patterns with some little alterations...mmmh,, i'll check it out in the store, but will probably by it,because it's such good price value if they are at least two patterns I like,, 6 euros for the mag, you can't get cheaper for a sewing patterns...

  14. As I'm the contrary of edgy and modern, I agree with you on the pants. But I see how they can appeal to anyone else: they have a lot of style potential (just not mine). The dresses are pretty and the big collar jacket is very nice. I will buy this issue (well, I always buy it anyway, just in case).
    Thanks for the review!

  15. I'm with you on those pants...but the dresses....lurve the dresses!

  16. Is it me or are all the plus-size patterns the prettiest & most feminine of the bunch?! I wish the made those deigns for all sizes.

I always enjoy your burda overview posts. Keep em coming. :)

And those pants!! Ugh! They're the worst. I would never - ever wear something like that.

  17. I love those first pants! The detail is different to anything I've seen before and I think they look super cool but still wearable for me. I like the jacket in your second pic, too, and the patterned dress with back seams on the arms. Overall really interesting stuff, I might have to pick it up.

  18. I think I'll buy this one. I've been sewing long sleeved dresses lately and this issue has some interesting patterns for this category. I think that with slightly minor alterations I can make myself some nice autumn/spring dresses from this issue. Love your Burda posts! :)

  19. Thanks for the review, I enjoy reading your take on Burdastyle. I've just bought this issue and wasn't overly impressed with the patterns although I do love the black dress with the lace especially if it was shortened. As for those pants, I'm lucky because with my wobbly thighs and saddlebags, I achieve this look in most trousers that I wear anyway so I don't need a special pattern! I also love the designer blouse - so pretty - but the ends of those sleeves would be food-encrusted by the end of a day's wear, I'm sure! I agree about the plus-sized patterns, they were the best in this issue.

  20. Ok, I would love all of these- puffy sleeves and all!

  21. I'm like you. would only be caught dead wearing these pants :) But love the plus-size dresses. But that means grading down :( so, no ill prob not get this issue, as usual

  22. I LOVE those pants. Will see if I still love them once made though....

  23. I'm not a fan of the trousers. But I do like the biker jacket, and the gathered dress. They are both very nice. I'll probably make an adapted version of the biker jacket but in wool and without leather. Let's hope it will work out.

  24. Haha! I love those pants! I've actually been hoping to find a pattern for pants like that. I also like wearing harem pants but I'm rather tall and not too worried about looking heavy or weird. I really like them because they're quirky and unusual.

  25. I almost look forward to your BurdaStyle reviews more than I do the magazine itself coming out. Very funny and usually my thoughts exactly!!

  26. I hope to see those pants all made it. They are very interesting and stylish looking... I love the maxi and want to make it but I too don't like the fullness in the back. I am hoping to make some changes and get rid of it because I like the rest of it quite a bit and I am a big Maxi dress wearer. Great blog! Just found you. :D ~Laurie
