La Mia Boutique 09/2012

Ugh... I'm so disappointed by this issue. The only word that comes to mind is meh. I bought it without even leafing through it, because if I had seen what's inside I probably would have left it at the newsstand (but then again, how I would have missed my monthly review).
My rule of thumb is: if there's at least one or two patterns I really like and that are fairly unique, at 5 euros, the issue is worth buying. But there's nothing really that interesting this month.

[Please excuse the bad quality of the collages. I couldn't bring myself to put more effort for these patterns I don't even like.]

These two capes are the only two patterns I kind of like, especially the second one. But I also know it's very, VERY unlikely that I'll sew a cape in the future, because as cute as they look, they're too uncomfortable for every day life.

One more nice cape and two button down shirts... As I said, nothing earth-shattering, nothing I haven't seen a million times already either on LMB or on Burda, so not exactly great.

The jackets in this issue look quite horrible, in my opinion. The first one is very boxy and the second looks quite frumpy. The dresses with the weird hem don't do anything for me, I also think they're probably not that flattering on anyone else but a model.
On a little side note, I kinda like the styling in these two photos, which is saying a lot, since the rest of the pictures have incredibly tacky styling or look plain weird.

Am I right? This is bad photography and bad styling in my book, and while this is not a fashion magazine, I expect a little more than this. With this issue, I literally bursted in laughter every time I turned the page.

If anyone has a different opinion than me and is interested in this issue, I'm selling it on ebay.
You can always see all the technical drawings on Flickr.

I'm quite sure that models 912 and 922 have been published in other issues of the past (but realized in other colors). uhm...
I like the third cape, but not enough to buy this issue.

  5. Hi, I've been reading your La Mia reviews and love the look of the magazine - alright maybe not this issue so much! Can I ask - all of the garments featured in the magazine, are there full patterns included for each of them in the magazine itself, or do you have to buy some of them separately. It looks from the preview on the publisher website that there could be 10 -15 items in one magazine - is this 10-15 full patterns too?
I live on a small island with a tiny fabric shop and no patterns available and so although it might not always be ideal, a subscription at overseas rate to this magazine could be just what I need to start a pattern library to keep on hand.
Do you have a recommended supplier?
And the stars on the patterns, is this the level of difficulty?
Sorry, so many questions! Thanks for the great feature on this magazine each month.

I agree with you. I'm not loving any of those looks. I was just going to ask if the Are stars under the titles and page numbers representing the degree of difficulty. (I thought it would be funnier if the stars were like the ones on movie reviews, where 5 stars is great, 3 stars is so-so and 1 star is terrible. If that were the case, none of their looks got very good reviews, ha ha)

forgive my typo, ignore the "Are" in between the words "the stars"

  8. The stars represent the level of difficulty and the page number is because technical numbers and photos are not in the same page as the technical drawings.

  11. Really poor issue, I agree! As for styling I always found LMB pretty bad taste... Tacky ladies in many pictures. I feel they try to be modern but fail miserably... Perhaps they should change the photographer or art director

  12. Somehow disqus wouldn't let me use my twitter account to comment earlier...the patterns are all very very "meh"..but you still managed to sell the issue for 10€? I'm impressed!

  13. Yup! The person who bought it liked the cape patterns, which are actually quite nice. I had to sell it to that price in order not to lose money, because ebay and Paypal fees are quite crazy...
