Burda Young F/W 2013

I was a bit shocked when I saw the preview of the latest Burda Young because I hadn't realized it was that time of the year yet, but here it is.

As in any other issue, there are less patterns (with more variations) than in regular Burda, and they are generally thought for a younger, less experienced audience.

I could swear I've seen a similar pattern in an old regular Burda, but I couldn't find it in recent issues.
I'm really, really drawn to this pattern. Obviously, I love it with the peter pan collar, but also without and in blouse form (see below). This pattern alone is making me want this issue...

I remember I had an asymmetrical mini skirt just like this one a long time ago, and, apparently, they're back in trend now. This is a little too short for me and the elastic waistband kind of ruins it, in my opinion. Still, it would look very trendy and modern on those of you with longer, leaner legs!

I've been eyeing batwing tops ever since seeing the Blair batwing shirt by Named Clothing (and Sophie's beautiful version). This pattern here is definitely not the same, but it could be good for experimenting, since I don't know how this silhouette would look on me.
And the pants... Let's just say I'm not a fan.

I really like this dress (and top) with the draped panel, and I'm intrigued by the construction. It looks like an easy, quick project for a beginner, and made in the right fabric, it could look very chic.
I like the idea of the peplum pants, but I don't know how flattering they could be... I certainly wouldn't want to add more volume around my hips, and I would have loved to see how they look on the model. C'mon Burda, we already spoke about your photography, it's time you set yourself straight already!

One thing I almost always like in Burda, is the outerwear, it's their forte. This jacket looks cool and modern, with interesting design elements. Bravo!

I was so disappointed when I saw the technical drawing of this jacket, because the photo reminded me a lot of the Watson jacket by Papercut, that I've been pining over for ages (why are their patterns so expensive? SIGH. SOB.). But no, the capelet is a separate piece. Bohoo. Still, it's a nice jacket.

All in all, there a few cute patterns, and I'll probably won't be able to resist.
What do you say? Did you purchase this issue? Should I?

  1. Nothing really for me in this issue, I also liked the coat but now when I know the drawing it's not so tempting, it's just a regular jacket with a seperate capelet, well... But maybe it's a simple desing for the beginners.

  2. I also really like the black coat and the first dress (geometrical with or without peter pan collar)....but I won't buy it just for those 2 patterns because I will not try to do a coat.
If only the 1st pant have been a low waist one it could have make me turn my mind...but once again, high waist (very high !) ...not for me.
By the way if someone can tell me were I could find a low waist pant pattern....:-)

  3. I feel your pain on the Watson Jacket. I want to make it SO BADLY. I've been thinking of asking for it as a Christmas gift, and then making it up during the Christmas holidays, BUT I WANT IT NOW! What is it about sewing patterns that turns me into a spoilt little girl??

  4. Hello...just wondered...do these patterns eventually appear on the burdastyle website? Or are they only in the magazine?

  5. I was also going to ask whether the patterns appear on the website? Or how to get hold of the magazine?

  7. Thank you very much for the review. As for the Watson jacket, there was a very nice pattern in Burda August 2007, where you can shorten the capelet at will.

  8. I have noting to say about the issue, but I WILL say that I have 2 papercut patterns, and they are 1000% worth the money. The paper holds up well, they are drafted so well, and the instructions are perfect. I wish I had the $$ to spend on all of their patterns. They also offer free international shipping :)

  9. I'll have to resign myself to make this investment sooner or later...

  10. Unfortunately, I don't have that issue, but thanks for the suggestion!

  11. There hasn't been a nice Burda easy/young in a very long time. Nice and trendy patterns + no need to kill my eyes trying to understand their messy pattern sheets = win. I bought it as soon as it was out, as it tends to sell out pretty quickly where i live. Are you tempted yet ? :)

  13. I know Papercut seems expensive (free shipping) but if you can just buy one pattern you should because the experience is so worth it, the packaging is beautiful, from the thick brown paper to the cute postcard and envelope, so much thought and love has gone into it :)

  14. Definitely like a few of these patterns! I have been pining for the Watson jacket too!!! I'm thinking maybe a birthday present :):):)

  15. Ooh! That asymmetrical top is just beautiful! I'm not sure it'd be worth me buying because it just doesn't ever get cold enough here in Singapore to wear most of the clothes, but I do like to live vicariously through others, so you should totally get it! ;-)

  16. It depends on where you are in the world! You should get in touch with the distributors of regular Burda and ask them if the magazine is available in your country.

  17. For the physical magazine, you should get in touch with Burda distributors and ask them.
I don't think I've seen patterns from Burda young on Burdastyle, but that might change, I don't know!

  19. Some patterns look really nice, but I've already got too much patterns on my to-sew list.. I've made the Watson Jacket and highly recommend it! I'll be posting about it soon!

  20. Oooh, I actually really like most of these! I'm going to see if my local bookstore has this issue in stock. Papercut Patterns are so fabulous!!

  21. i think most of these look very interesting, especially the fist dress and the pink dress with the flounce. i'm just puzzled about the target group... i mean, the first dress is as far as you can get from an "easy pattern for a less experienced audience". but yes, some great patterns!

  22. Hey, I just bought this issue two days ago and I can tell you there is a longer version of this skirt in it as well as a longer version of the bat wing jumper. I had the same thought about the elastic waistband. But we all know that we can simply add some darts in the back and insert a zipper in a whiff, can't we? The more I leaf through my Burda issues the more I like them. I always hate most of the patterns first. Basicly for Burda often choosing strange fabrics. Then I leaf through them again and I start to think of other fabrics and pattern alterations. And suddenly I find myself planing a totally new wardrobe with too less time on my hands. Damn it!

  23. I bought the issue right away because I fell in love with the coat with the zipper when I saw the preview. In my opinion it is the best Burda easy/young ever! But there is not much in this issue that beginner sewists can make which means that it kind of misses the point. However, I'm loving that their patterns are so on trend :)

  24. I'm in the same boat as Alice! Is this magazine called "Burda Young" or is it "Burda Easy Fashion"? I'm having a hard time searching either one!

    Thanks!

  25. In Italy it's "young and easy", but the original German version is just "Easy"... Hope it helps!

  26. I actually contacted the distributors at Burda and they sent me a ton of links, none of which were helpful (they told me it wasn't a magazine and I'd have to buy all the patterns separately!). Then yesterday I was at a fabric store I don't normally go to, and this magazine was sitting right there at the checkout! I can't wait to make that Peter Pan collar dress!

  27. Hi, I'm trying to find the pattern for the coat you shown above. Is tris from Burda young or Burda easy? I was trying to find out on the Burda website and found the same model in Burda easy magazine. Btw, I can not find Burda young at all. Please help :)

  29. I didn't know they had a special Burda Young magazine! I've never seen it anywhere in stores here, do you know where I can buy it online?
