Burdastyle Magazine 10/2013

I haven't made my mind on this issue yet. There are many likable patterns and not too much fugliness, but I'm not smitten. Although I must admit, I realized I feel about Burda just like someone that commented on one of my last reviews: I feel very critical and negative the first time I look at a new issue, but when I go back and look at it a few months later, I like it a lot more. Does that happen to you too?

I decided to focus on the positive for this review. The best patterns for me in this issue are for outerwear, which, as I wrote in another post, is probably Burda's strongest suit.
I love hooded coats and this one is no exception. I'm not crazy about the detachable belt, it looks inconvenient. Belt loops needed.

These military jackets appear quite often on Burda, so if you're a regular buyer like me this is nothing new. Still, it's a very cute pattern.

Beautiful! I don't like the fabric choice at all, but this is a killer jacket and it looks so professionally made in the photo! Depending on the fabric you choose, this could also be very versatile. Love it.

Ok, wait before you judge me for including this.
First of all, let's all agree that those faux fur panels are batshit crazy. Seriously ugly.
But the rest of the coat is quite lovely! The silhouette is very 60's and it reminds me of a coat from Burda Young F/W 2008 that was actually one of my first sewing projects. It turned out very cute, but unfortunately too big for me.

Then, we have a couple dresses I'm not fully convinced about.
I like the idea of this dress and the neckline is beautiful, but all those pleats around the waist scream "danger" to me. Obviously, you can't tell a thing from the photo, and besides, the model hardly needs to hide some belly.

Again, I like the lines and the idea of this dress, but I would be afraid of adding volume around this area. Moreover, you have a fold on the crotch area and a triangular panel pointing at your butt, all in one dress... That might be too much.

I haven't decided if I like these two garments or not, but I'm leaning towards the yes. Honestly, I don't have a proper comment for this outfit, but I didn't want to leave out this photo. Sorry about that XD

This bustier is a piece I would probably never make for myself, but it looks striking on the model! The ballon-shaped (how would you call it?) bottom really makes it special.
The pants are basic, but there's nothing wrong with them.

I was surprised at how much I liked this outfit, made of simple pieces that are very beginner-friendly and hack-friendly (you guessed it, I would immediately add a collar to the blouse). I'm impressed.

Finally, some of the plus size patterns are quite beautiful:
I love this asymmetrical top, it looks very sophisticated, no?

Super cute outfit, I especially like the skirt. The jacket looks like it's pretty easy to make, but it looks great, which is always a good thing.

  1. I'm not sure about October's Burda... The only things I kind of like are the two dresses, but there might be the problem with the first one, namely the neckline - there is a blouse made from the same pattern and there's some gaping at the neckline. Of course you cannot tell anything from that photo, right...
The other dress is interesting and IF I buy this issue it will be for this dress, but again it's on a very skinny girl so how can we, normal women, relate to its shape and look?...

  2. I always love to read your reviews, and I agree there are a few good items in there, I might buy it.
Is it me or have you become a lot milder towards Burda? A few months ago you were a bit more critical and I actually liked that a lot! You cracked me up sometimes! You know... the 'how-to-sew-rectangles-magazine'... I still love your reviews, however, they don't make me laugh out loud as much as they used to do.
I know there were quite some comments about your critical reviews, but seriously I think all the different opinions add to the wonderful melting pot of styles and shapes.
So, please, Anna, give us something bad to laugh at! :)

  4. I agree with Rachel I loved it when you used to give a more honest review of the magazine. Used to make me laugh out loud also. Have to say I dont like this October issue at all.

  5. Don't worry, Rachel, I'll dish it out when there's ground to do it!
The last few issues have been less bad than the rest of the year, so that's probably why I seem milder :) For example, in this issue the only real fugly item was this shirt (http://www.burdafashion.com/it/Riviste/burda_style/113_A_Camicia/1270777-1000019-1803841-1803845-1803874.html) but it's actually just because of fabric choice, the pattern is not even that bad.
I honestly have fun writing reviews, but if the magazine is steering in a better direction, I'm happy as a customer! That being said, I'm sure there will be more fabric rectangles headed our way in the future.

  6. Hey, I'm still honest! I'm just less pissed because the patterns this month are not as bad in my opinion! :)

  7. I really like the outerwear. The hooded coat especially. I agree about the belt though. And I may need a bit more shape...

  9. I reaaaaally like that coaT! I just saw it on their website... very tempting :) Also like the dress with the square neckline - would like to see it made up first, but very promising!

  10. I bought this issue for the second dress. I'm not really worried about the triangle part. I think it is a cute twist, finally sth a bit different from the usual pleats in the waist.
I also liked the idea of the first one but don't really like the neckline. So if i ever make it - it will be with the different neckline for sure.
On the other hand, all the egg shaped lines I found so unflattering.
    Looved the military jacket!

  11. there are a couple of gems here- I really like the beige outfit (skirt & top that you said you'd add a collar to) and the batwing top and pleated skirt just above it. the drawing did nothing for me on the top but seeing it in a slinky knit is quite chic. being in LA though, I have no use for the outerwear :)

  12. After seeing your review, I need to buy this issue as I can see a lot of potential in some of the patterns. I particularly love the two coats (minus faux-fur), the two jackets are amazing, the pleated skirt is so cute (but no sequins for me) and the blouse/A-line skirt outfit. I think Burda is always so much better during the winter months and they are definitely going stronger right now.

    Thanks for the review!
